Pauline Pearce, Artist. Welcome.
I was lucky as a child to grow up near the coast and yet to also have contact with the countryside. This led to my interest in collecting, learning and recording the small things in nature. Shells, pebbles, feathers, leaves, fossils, seeds, flowers, all became my subject matter as far back as I can remember. Later I became interested in the geology and archaeology of areas that I moved to, immediately wanting to know more about the natural world in that specific location. This remains true today.
I begin work using a variety of media. Detailed studies in graphite, pen and ink, or watercolour followed by blind drawings to move away from the detail and yet with a knowledge of it. My process of creating work taken from these studies can take weeks or even months to complete.
My main body of work is always print based. I work either in relief through lino cut or woodcut, or in intaglio using collagraph. Sometimes the early studies will lead to mono types, particularly where colour and shape are the focus.
I also make artists books, often related to a body of work, although sometimes the whole concept develops in book form from the start.
Recently I have become interested in natural earth pigments, both from plants and from rocks found in my location. I have experimented with inks made from plants gathered from the wild but also many plants found in my garden. Going forward I am now investigating the rocks in my new location here in North Devon.
